Every Teacher's Nightmare

These are the stories that need to be passed around the state. These are the stories that everyone needs to keep in mind. These are the situations that should lead off Education 101 and be in everyone's mailbox on the first day of school. From The Columbian:
A Battle Ground elementary teacher remains on paid leave after a parent complained that the teacher assaulted her daughter.

The 10-year-old girl said her teacher, Linda Cawley, yanked her wrist Friday afternoon to take away a bell the girl had picked up. She said Cawley then threw the bell across the classroom; the bell bounced off the wall and hit another student in the forehead.

Detective Sgt. Jason Perdue of the Battle Ground Police Department said the investigation should be completed in two days.

Perdue said police are interviewing students and assessing whether the 10-year-old girl suffered an injury.

"Just removing an item from a student is not a crime," Perdue said. "It's the manner in which they do it."

Others close to the situation say they believe the story has been exaggerated.

Kym Alexander, Battle Ground teachers union president, said it bothered her that the student's mother was speaking to the press.

"I question in my mind what the parents are doing," Alexander said.
There's more in the full article.

It only takes one incident to ruin a career, and it'll be interesting to see how it all works out.

Here in NYC, our union has instituted a policy that teachers can be suspended without pay up to 90 days based on unsubstantiated allegations.

I know of two cases in which teachers were falsely charged, and none in which charges were sustained.

Linda Cawley has been totally cleared of all accusations. The statements made by the mother and child were false!

Words can not even explain how FIRED UP we are that Mrs. Cawley has been cleared. I'm a parent in this school and she is a dearly loved teacher who did not deserve this. It's sad for the child and sad for the parents because I know I will never look at that child the same again.
My "thought a think" is - should the school superindendent support the teacher? Or is it her job to support the parents?? Just curious... I never heard a word about any interaction with anyone from the super.

Linda Cawley was guilty in every since of the word. The only action that saved her was her tenure with the school. The parents had every right to contact the police. The school dist is the one that released the names of the students parents along with the police department. It does not take a superhero to find phone numbers etc. after that info has been released. It is a free country and it is every persons right to see justice through. The parents did the righ thing in this case, to often are these things ignored.

I agree, linda cawley is guilty and still should not be in the classroom, the police report states that at some time during the incident an item when flying through the classroom, this item was a bell that was thrown by Linda Cawley. Throwing bells across the room at any time is bad. Lead by example not by you bad temper.

Linda cawley had every chance in the world to clear her name and decided to remain quite. It is a free country, freedome of the press and the right to free speech, my heart go out to the family of the child that was injured as a result of a burnt out teacher that lost her temper. She should be ashamed and anything that happen to her she had comming. She could have contacted the parents and tried to discuss this thing like civil adults, but the principal said it would be checked into and nothing was done. I am glad the media was involved. It keep the lazy admin on their toes.
