It strikes a chord because I've struggled with what to call this as well!
The fact that it has so many descriptors bothers me a bit, because I suspect it signals that we might be expecting too much bang for the buck. (one of the reasons the WASL has disappointed some)
Lately I've been just calling them "growth tests" in honor of the NCLB's expansion of this method.
One thing I've learned about education policy is not to sweat the terms too much. . . just use whatever term is trendy and do what you intended to do anyway.
