The New York Times on Living With ADHD
There's a very neat feature over at the Times' website on people with ADHD; the audio is wonderfully interesting to listen to.
I'm not a big ADHD guy; I think the amount of medication that we give kids today is absolutely insane. There are kids who need it, sure, but I think there are many more where the pills are a mistake. It's interesting to hear from those who actually have the diagnosis.

I don't have a diagnosis, and I'm not an expert, but I've been to Wal*Mart after 9:00 pm (even after 10:00 pm) and seen more kids there than I should have. I've also read the studies about sleep habits in the US. I also have children.
I would say the first thing to do with a kid that someone is ready to diagnose and drug is to journal their sleep habits. If they aren't getting nine or ten hours of sleep, taze the parents each moring as the kids get dropped off at school.
Once parents learn how to manage kids' sleep for a month, then lets talk about exercise.
Again with the taze for too much TV/gaming and not enough muscle activity.
Nuther month, then lets talk about ADHD.
