The International Reading Association on Literacy Coaches

There’s a new website for literacy coaches at www.literacycoachingonline.org. It’s a joint project between the IRA and the National Council of Teachers of English, and the brief peek I took was promising. It could become quite popular around here if the Washington Learns recommendations on providing coaches in every school come to fruition.

It's not necessarily damning, but it goes to the point that paying more money to teachers who have the national certification might not be the best public policy. $3,500 was a lot, but 10% of base salary could tickle $6,000 for an awful lot of teachers, and look at where they're at:

Bellevue - 127
Lake Washington - 47
Seattle - 43
Tacoma - 40
North Thurston - 38

Bellevue and Lake Washington aren't what I'd call high-needs districts by any measure.

More fuel to the fire, from North Carolina.

Now consider the above in light of this article, which says that North Carolina has the most NB Certified teachers in the country. What difference does that make, when they're not working with the high needs kids?
